Gas Heater Repairs: Four Fundamental Guidelines for Simple Troubleshooting

If your gas heater is not functioning correctly, consult an experienced HVAC contractor for repairs. Modern gas furnaces are designed to promote safety for the users. However, the modification or damage to the components during amateur DIY repairs could lead to accidental gas leakages and subsequent fires. A professional heater expert will restore your equipment and ensure the safety of the building and the public. Still, if the problems in your furnace are minor, you can handle basic repairs. Here are essential guidelines for troubleshooting the heater.

Inspect the Heater

When planning to conduct simple repairs, you must identify the potential causes of the malfunction. Often, the problems resulting in issues like failure to turn on, low heating or general inefficiencies are related to the lack of maintenance or careless setup. Therefore, you should start by cataloguing your causes of concern. Some common issues include cold spots, excess heat, increased energy demands and breakdown. You should also inspect the equipment for signs of damage that could cause malfunction.

Clean the Clogged Filters

If you have noticed inadequate airflow from your heater, check the state of the filters. Clogged filters are a common problem in gas furnaces due to the accumulation of grime and particles. The blockage will limit the quantity of warm air around the house. You might also notice the poor quality of the circulating air. Additionally, the temperature around the space might be inconsistent. Clean your filters thoroughly or replace the old ones to promote air circulation.

Assess Your Thermostat

The thermostat connected to your gas heater could be the cause of operational mishaps. You must ensure this element is in the best condition before commissioning unnecessary repairs. The primary source of thermostat issues is old batteries. Check the battery types and purchase replacements. If this is not the problem, clean the unit. Thermostat functionality depends on sensitivity to temperature, so the components must be clean for optimal efficiency. Alternatively, you can replace the device entirely.

Review the Setup

Finally, check the entire gas heater setup for maintenance oversights that could be causing poor performance. The most obvious problem is inconsistent electrical supply. If your electrical panel cannot provide enough power, your circuit breaker could trip, cutting off the power. Therefore, confirm the soundness of the panel, wiring and outlet. Also, make sure the pilot light and furnace flame are on. In addition, clear the vents in your building to eliminate obstructions.
